Hi All!

A cube competition in June/July has been mentioned in this forum. Well, it is up to us to organise it! Eric has spoiled us with organising magnificent competitions, but we cannot always relay on him. In the rest of the world (you know the part of the globe outside the litte red dot Wink it is mainly the cubers themselves that organise competitions. Thus, I hereby probe your interest of organising a competition.

Two key questions are when and where.
- When is it appropriate for a competition? Is anytime in June or July equally good or bad?
- Where to hold the competition? This is in my experience the most tricky question. Does any have access a local that we can borrow for free? A canteen or lecture room in a school would suffice. Let's have some brainstorming. Come with ideas!

An interesting piece of information is that Lucas Garron will visit Singapore in July and would appreciate a competition the weekend of 10-11 July. However, he must know about it within a few weeks.

Well, the school holidays in Singapore are from Saturday 29th May to Sunday 27th June. So June would be the best time to organize a competition. Can't help with location though....

Too bad I can't come to Singapore on those months. My next visit would probably be on September. I'll try to watch the F1. Smiley

Suggestion on the venue. If possible, lights should be coming from a proper light bulb. I think many were distracted during the 2nd day of the competition last time because of the Sun's light going through the mall's ceiling.

Having the WCA Regulation posters was also a good thing.

Best competition for you guys would be July. It will give everyone enough preparation for the Asian Championships on October.

Cheers,

Paolo

Ok, June sounds more favourable.

And the venue - c'mon guys. Show some initiative and creativity! For instance, during school holidays there's a lot of free space in schools...

Can't really help much here, serving my National Service, so I don't really have the time.

Quite true, and I wouldn't mind a competition on the weekends. Smiley

But I don't think schools would be willing to let us hold a competition at their school... Undecided

Yes, its hard trying to get a school to let us use their space. Security is their main concern, they're afraid of their things going missing or defaced.

Yes, I am fully aware that there are differences. This is precisely why I asked you about suitable venue. What kind of venue can be borrowed in Singapore? At Bucalan Open 2010 in the Philippines, they had the competition in a multipurpose house of a Homeowners' Association - and it was outdoors. Is it viable to use the open ground floor of a HDB-housing?

It seems that this community is not interested in competitions. Apparently, I have to turn elsewhere.

anders:

as probably one of the longest lasting cubers who haven't quit the cubing scene here together with jt, I have to admit that the puzzling scene here in Singapore is no longer as hyped up as it used to be. As moderately active cubers, we are happy with the competitions that eric has organized. Of course, the venue was a little too loud, but with all the public attention it was kinda fun.

I go for competitions not for the results; I go for competitions for the fun of it.

Right now, it is the exam period of most schoolers, so do expect the forum to be a bit dead. Speaking of which I just had my 3rd paper =P
