when making cross (assuming on D) what are tips to find the first f2l pair?

Look ahead, during your inspection you should already know what moves you need to make for your cross. While solving the cross from memory, you can look for the first of your pairs.

track corner , cross last move find edge .  Smiley

After trying it out, I know what you mean by corner tracking and find edge after cross. What left is just practice.... Grin
